Ryan Howard and Justin Monreau are the new MVPs.
For the NL I couldn't exactly argue. They were EXTREMELY close, unfortunately, I'm going to have to say Jeter or Hafner should have won the MVP, no doubt.
Jeter VORP: 80.5 Hafner VORP: 79.7 Santana VORP: 79.6 Ortiz VORP: 76.8 Dye VORP: 64.6 Monreau VORP: 52.0 A-Rod VORP: 51.6
Now, if we look here, the top 3 batting VORP getters blow Monreau out of the water. Unfortunately, since Santana is a pitcher he has to be penalized there despite but VORP. Ironically, A-Rod, who supposedly had a "horrible" year is almost tied with Monreau (and he should have gotten a Silver Slugger). I mean the Rookie of the Year, Hanley Ramirez, had a higher VORP than Monreau. Monreau was a good batter, yes, but no MVP.

I was surprised Morneau won as well. I figured it'd be Jeter as a matter of course.

VORP is an overrated stat. The MVP isn't handed out to the guy most productive over the average player at his position - it's handed out to the guy who, if his team was without him, would never have been where they were. That is truly what the MVP is.
Consider it like that - as it should be - and Morneau is a fine choice for MVP. It also means Pujols should be the NL choice. Jeter or Morneau would've been ok, but you can't complain about either. And VORP is just ridiculous to be included.

maybe i am naive.. but morneau had 20 more homers, 30 more rbis and was a big reason why the twins did so well in a very tough division. plus vorp doesnt take into account defense.. but even in a one sided offensive look, morneau was still better

If I chose a Twins player I would have chosen Mauer for his average and being a catcher-ness. Monreau wasn't even the MVP of his team =\

Sorry man, you're just repeating the same tired crap the New York papers are kicking out - I'm a Twins fan and trust me - Justin was our MVP. What we've lacked the last 4-5 years is the big bat - it sends ripples through your lineup.
Again - VORP should have no bearing on MVP and while defense is important, it isn't that big of a difference.

Let's not overlook the fact that Morneau also grounded into fewer double plays than Mr. Jeter.

Mauer was good in the clutch. Mauer had the batting title as a catcher. Mauer was a great overall player.
He deserved the MVP, IMO.

Mauer was not nearly as good as Morneau in the clutch. Morneau was the best clutch player in baseball this year.
Lets face it though - there was no clear cut winner, any of about 6 guys would've been about the same.
